CHAPTER 11

“He can’t die, Law. Call the fucking police and an ambulance. Hell, give him your blood. I don’t care what we have to do to save him. He’s in this mess because of us.” Hannah’s heart was in tatters.

Every ragged inhale and bloody exhale from Dax was a knife to the chest. The hole in his chest was massive. Hannah refused to think about the fact that no one could survive the injury. Dax was going to live.

Lawson’s face pinched. Hannah hadn’t realized her brother hadn’t completely subdued the male he’d been fighting until the guy kicked out, sending Lawson falling to the floor.

Her brother was agile and managed to twist his body and plunge his elbow into the male’s sternum when he landed. The attacker grunted before his eyes rolled back in his head. Lawson punched him in the side of the skull for good measure, then jumped to his feet and rushed to Hannah’s side.

Lawson handed Hannah her torn shirt and jeans. She fished in the back pocket for her phone and dialed emergency services. The female that answered was bored when she asked how she could help.

“Send an ambulance and the police. We’re out off route 163. Four males kidnapped a shifter and shot an FBI agent. He needs help. Now!” Hannah’s heart was frantic while sluggish at the same time. An ache had set up shop in her throat, making it difficult to talk without breaking down into tears.

“Where are you precisely, ma’am?” The female was alert and responsive now.

Hannah sucked in a breath. “We’re under an old barn in a secret lab. PRL and Pernstow are behind it. They shot Dax. He’s an FBI agent. I know shifters don’t matter, but he does. Get help to him now.”

“Everyone matters,” the emergency services operator assured Hannah. “Stay on the line. I’ve sent police and EMTs your way. We are tracking your signal to get your exact location.”

Lawson pressed his big hand over Dax’s chest. A boulder settled in Hannah’s gut when he didn’t react at all. They needed to do more. “I have to get something to put on his wound. I’m setting the phone down but not hanging up.”

“Stay on the line with me. Don’t put the cell down.” Hannah heard the voice and ignored it as she dropped the device then raced to the room where they'd been at first.

She rifled through the boxes and grabbed a needle and a few vials, taking them back to her brother and Dax. “We have to give him some of your blood.”

Lawson pushed the phone away from them with his free hand. Hannah didn’t give a shit who heard her at the moment. Later she would care when the humans decided to use her kind for experiments openly.

"You need to act fast. Liv indicated time is of the essence when it comes to serious injuries. But this might not do anything to help him.” Lawson’s warning went through one ear and out the other.

Hannah believed it would mean the difference between life and death for Dax.
